This cover is so pretty. The water in the backgroud is beautiful. I love the colors of the tail and the tattoo. That would be a really cool looking tattoo. And I love the color purple. I want to be a mermaid even more than I did before if I could have that tattoo and tail.
So unlike some paranormal/fantasy books, Tempest is aware that she is part mermaid. She knows that when she turns 17 she will have to choose between the water and land. But she wants nothing to do with being a mermaid. Her mother left her, her two little brothers, and her father 6 years ago. And she doesn't want to be anything like her mother. She likes her life on land with her family, friends, and boyfriend, Mark. But everything changes when Kona shows up.
Kona was sent by Tempest's mother to keep an eye on her. But he isn't a merman, he's a selkie. They eventually form feelings for each other, even though Tempest is still with Mark. When Tempest and Kona are on the beach, Kona gets attacked and taken away. Tempest follows him and finds out that it was his brothers that took him. That's when she finds out that he's a selkie and learns about her mother. Tempest refuses to believe this and wants to leave. She stays for a little longer, but still doesn't believe this.
While with Kona, Tempest finds her mother. But not for long because Tempest has to watch her mother be killed. Tempest then learns that her mother left not because she wanted to or that the ocean kept calling her, but because she had to take care of the tribe she came from. Tempest decides to go home and try to lead a normal life. After being home for a few weeks, she decides that she made the wrong choice and goes back to the ocean. On the way to the beach, she runs into Kona and they jump into the ocean.
I wish there was more of her painting in the book. She only talks about how she loves it, but I think it would have been cool if she painted something during the book. But I liked her pretty well. She really cared about her family and didn't want to leave them. That's why she didn't want to become a mermaid, even though she could feel the water calling for her.
He was sort of the nice bad boy. He was kind of a bad boy because he was flirting with Tempest while she was with Mark, but he was really nice because he genuinely cared about her. I also do like tall, dark, and handsome boys.
There wasn't a whole lot of him, but I sorta felt bad for him. I mean, his girlfriend is gone for two weeks and when she comes back, she's distant. Maybe he can be happy with Chelsea the Cheerleader.
Tempest's mother. I don't think that she should have died so soon. I would've liked to hear her side of the story for leaving her family and how much it hurt her.
He believes that Cecily will come back to him and his family. He keeps his hopes up, but they are later crushed after Tempest tells him that she is dead.
Overall, this book was great and I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy! I'm happy that this mermaid book didn't let me down!
